The Quit Lit Book Club

Welcome to The Quit Lit Book Club, where each month, we read and discuss a memoir about recovery.

JOIN THE CLUB

The Background

I’ve always wanted to be a part of a book club, but no one ever invited me! Cue the self-pity spiral. Maybe it’s because when I was drinking, I was an erratic mess, and when I quit, I couldn’t join in the wine culture that sometimes exists around book clubs. Who knows? But what good is feeling sorry for myself? Why not start my own book club and invite you all?

And of course, since my debut memoir, SOBER MOM (July 2026, She Writes Press), is about recovery and my Substack is about recovery, my book club is about … you guessed it, RECOVERY!

Introducing the Quit Lit Book Club

Welcome to the Quit Lit Book Club, where each month, we read and discuss a memoir about recovery. Then, we meet on Zoom on the first Monday of each month to discuss the book. (This is where I’ll need help from you all. Since I’ve never been to a book club, I’m not sure what goes on at the club meetings!)

Who Should Join

Of course, people in recovery from alcoholism and/or addiction might especially enjoy this book club, but it’s not limited to those of us in recovery. Perhaps you're sober curious? Or maybe you love someone who is in recovery or who is struggling? Or maybe you just love a good redemption story. Anyone is welcome.

November’s Pick

For November, we are reading Dry by Augusten Burroughs. Dry is Burroughs’s hilarious and moving account of coming off the booze and attempting to live his drunken life sober.

Praise for Dry

“Laughter on the road to sobriety. Mr. Burroughs remains adept at mixing comedy and calamity.” ―Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Beneath the quick-flowing, funny-sad surface of Burroughs' prose lurks considerable complexity: wherever he goes, whatever he's doing, you can feel how badly he wants to drink-as well as the sadness from which that desire comes and the courage it takes to make the sadness so funny, all at the same time. If anything, Dry is even more compelling than Burroughs' first outing.” ―Lev Grossman, Time
